Long painting hours...

Right after I woke up this morning, I spent a good half of the day just to paint this...

Getting it to look similar is harder than I thought, especially when I wanna duplicate the painting onto another cloak. Not to mention the Terminator Armour and the face. I'll be working as fast as possible on the Chaos Terminator Lord because I will be going back to my hometown tomorrow.

Which also means that I will not have any painting done for the next 10 days but I will definitely post up some stuff and talk about some other related stuff...

"Gotta finish this fast!"

Citadel's Warhammer 40,000 Basing Kit Review - The insides

Now, I bet you guys who haven't bought this kit are itching to know what is inside... There are 46 pieces of resin for each base, 4 being for the large bases... Basically you're looking at 23 different pieces, that's all, meaning 2 of them will be the same, they are already seperated in the respective tubs.

The slates tubs are actually bits and pieces of resin, just like sand, nothing special about them...

I've put them out for a photo so you guys can have a closer look. Not all of them are here, guess I missed some of them...

I've already completed my Chaos Terminator Lord since I could do the base. So I used 2 pieces for him and some sand to fill up the spaces.

Once painted, it's hard to tell which is resin and which is the GW sand... Like I said before, the key here is moderation, don't overflow your base with terrain or it will look too "busy" and your mini won't be able to find a proper place to stand...

I painted the marine head following the Ultramarine's colour, as the Alpha Legion and Ultramarines hated each other...

I just didn't know what colour to paint the rim, I mixed the colour of the armour for it but it just looks weird. I didn't want to use grey as it would look like unpainted plastic. So I went with white anyway...

Citadel's Warhammer 40,000 Basing Kit Review

I've always searched online to get a better look at the Citadel Warhammer 40,000 Basing Kit, but rarely I get proper images of the contents of the box.

Anyway, today one of my shipment has arrived along with my very own basing kit. Priced at £ 12, same price with a Tyranid Lictor, Obliterator, and the Chaos Terminator Lord, this thing here contains a load of resin and a brass etched frame.

We'll continue on with some pictures...
(Size of box, just like the Chaos Terminator Lord box)

Yes, this is not a toy, simply because it is resin! I threw away the box already and I've rinsed and washed all the basing materials, except the slate of course.

The 40k Basing Set Tub has enough bases for at least 15-20 models per tub. There will be at least 2 of the same pieces and the quality of the sculpt is amazing!

There are bits and pieces of Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, Sisters of Battle, Eldar, Necrons and Imperial Guards... There are lots of random things you can find in there like pipes, skulls, and dead missiles...

The brass etched frame looks really good, though I don't really know how to use them. I'll eventually figure out how to use them anyway...

I think this box here is worth buying if you have extra money and don't want to spend on more models, especially if you have to many unpainted ones.

I recommend this box set for players who want their models to stand out of the crowd!

Nurgle's Little Minion

Out of all 4 of the Chaos Gods, my favourite is Nurgle, followed by Tzeentch and Khorne, Slaanesh being the least.

And as we all know, Nurgle loves his little gribbly flies...

Today, I've been irritated by one of them as one of them were flying around in my room...

That little fly, which is well known to thrive and breed amongst decaying fruits or fruit skin aka rubbish, comes from the rooms of the less responsible residents of the hostel... As they just couldn't be bothered to discard their thrash properly.

To get to the point, take a look.

Yup, it flew into my pot of Rotting Flesh as I was painting one of my 'ard Boyz... It was struggling to get out but it seems that as it struggles more and more, it gets worse.

Well, I had to discard it in a way that it could never fly again. Since it has wasted me that little precious (not to mention expensive!) paint...

And this is what I'm working on now.

"I'm just waiting for the green light to do the painting marathon, 8 hours, 10 Boyz, I hope the equipment could support what I want to do..."

Battleforces poll closed, thanks for voting - Some extra pieces of news

Thanks for participating in the votes guys, it is clear that the Tyranids Battleforce have been the most popular purchase for a player, whilst the rest did quite well.

I did some injustice to the Eldar Battleforce and I do think it deserves a 7/10 at least.

So now I hope that new players would find the Battleforce reviews useful to help them on their army planning and purchase.

Read a rumour somewhere a few days ago:

1) Phil Kelly (my favourite codex author) is writing the Codex:Dark Eldar! Pray and hope it gets released next year as this year, the schedule seems to be quite packed.

2) Space Wolves might be able to make it this year! So all you Space Wolves players, or future Space Wolves players, start stocking up on Space Wolves stuff! Just in case GW decides to do something funny about the Space Wolves box sets now...

3) Necrons are being worked on too!

4) My Tutorial - Assembling and Painting an Ork Nob might be heard in the airwaves on the 40k radio! This news came from Peter of the Aspect Portal.

I've been more on the gaming aspect since Friday, though I want to get more of my painting done before I return to my hometown since I'm already on my holidays. Today I will be testing out another one of my Ork list, if I feel that it is powerful and effective, (powerful when the tide can mow the enemy down, effective if they can work like Eldar) then I would share the army list.

And the fun part is, there won't be Snikrot, Nob Bikers, Boss Zagsstruk or any special characters, just da Boyz, sum 'o dem trukks and da bigger boyz, Nobz...

"Today I'll be going against Tyranids, and this guy who plays Tyranids really can kick serious butt with his Tyranid Warriors, Gaunts and Carnifex, that's all he uses, not a Nidzilla army, a swarm army, only 3 Carnifice and the swarms are a massive headache.

MUST KILL SYNAPSE CREATURES FIRST!"

Update on the Painting Marathon

A few weeks ago, I wanted to paint 20 'ard Boyz in 19 hours, video it, and put it into accelerated motion. But after discussing with my friend who will be responsible for the video taking, it is just too difficult to compress such time into a short 10 minute video given the equipment that we have. Besides, I've never painted a Black Orc before...

So the new outcome now is, I will paint 10 Slugga Ork Boyz instead. I will limit myself to less than 8 hours to finish them all. They will start with a white sprayed base coat, and they will all be assembled first. The sand will be glued on seperate bases so they can be painted seperately... I will maintain my quality as well, just to be fair, and I will definitly include some flames/checks free hand on the Boyz...

I do hope that we can make the video a success...

"Now, to drill all the slugga holes..."

Painting - More Ork Nobz!

Well, I've been quite busy these few days, had a bunch of orders to make for my friends, especially from GW direct! Pray and hope I won't get taxed for it!

Since I'm officially on holiday now, I can paint as much as I want, doesn't seem like a difference to me, but at least I don't have to attend classes anymore.

Anyway, here's what I've been painting lately, more Ork Nobz for the army... Especially Power Klaws!

Sooner or later I will make sure I can field the full foot slogging Orks! 180 Boyz on the table! It's not easy, but I can do it, one boy at a time...

"Working on more Nobz and a Painboy for them, then I'm gonna prepare more 'ard boyz from the Black Orcs box, I hope it arrives soon..."

The best Battleforce set for value? Part 2, Battleforces Overview

Ok, maybe I was a bit too harsh when I said that I would talk about the worst valued battleforce, there is not even a need to open up a poll to find the worst since it already shows at the poll now...

But I think we can discuss about whether you would buy a second or third battleforce after your first. Remember, it's not necessary for a battleforce to be useful, but when you spent and thought you "saved" money, you find those redundant models that you will never use accumulate, you'll be wondering if you either saved or actually have spent more by buying more battleforces.

I will be setting a rating system here from 1-10, 1 being less chance for me to buy it the second time, 10 being that definitely I will be buying it again if I were to build an army. I will also go through the contents of all the battleforces (except the Imperial Guards for now, since they aren't open to the market yet).

Oh, and heads up, battleforces have a new price already, at 55 GBP per box, I think the price hike will occur in either June or July. But the Imperial Guards Battleforce already has the new price tag of 55 GBP. A 10% increase, sigh...

I hope and pray that the GW web crawlers (if they do have some to find and sue people's butt off for copyright infringement) to watch this so they know what we want and what we think ain't so useful in the battleforces.

Rating: 7/10
Good starting point, but the people don't seem to want the Possessed. They should be replaced with something else. I wouldn't buy a second box just because of the Possessed.
Chaos Space Marine Battleforce:
15 Chaos Space Marines There's nothing wrong with having more CSM in the army!
Khorne Berzerkers Only useful for Khorne Worshippers, but it can easily be sold off.
5 Possessed Chaos Space Marines Err, I don't think Possessed are actually useful at all due to their randomness.
1 Chaos Space Marines Rhino Rhinos are always a welcomed.

Rating: 9/10
Good for a full biker army, for those who intend to use the White Scar's army list but use Dark Angel parts for conversion, this is good.
Dark Angels Ravenwing Battleforce:
6 Dark Angels Ravenwing Bikes Dark Angels parts anyone? These many bikes in a box can save you a load of money. Not to mention the Dark Angel parts.
1 Dark Angels Ravenwing Attack Bike A 2 wound bike? Fear me.
1 Dark Angels Ravenwing Land Speeder Land Speeders are cheap, efficient, and annoying to the enemy.

Rating: 6/10
I don't know much about the Dark Eldar since I started playing last year.
Dark Eldar:
20 Dark Eldar Warriors Ain't that a good load of warriors?
5 Dark Eldar Reaver Jetbikes Jetbikes are fast, and this really fits the Dark Eldar to use them to harass the enemy.
1 Dark Eldar Raider I don't know what this thing here does, but it looks good.
1 Jungle Trees set Who doesn't love free terrain? :)

Rating: 3/10
I won't recommend this for a starting player. Starting Eldar players must plan their army list before buying anything so you won't regret any redundant purchases like I did.
Eldar:
Eldar Dire Avengers Having so little Dire Avengers, it won't be effective as having a full 10 men squad.
Eldar Guardians No thanks, with heavy weapons all they do is sit and shoot. When being shot at, they will run off the table.
Eldar War Walker Now this is cool, "9 War Walkers outflanking in reserve" will be the last thing you want to hear from an Eldar player.
Eldar Heavy Weapon with 2 Crew Yeah, but not so useful... Maybe to me it isn't useful...
Eldar Wave Serpent This is the more expensive and faster version of a Rhino, still, the best thing in the box...

Rating: 10/10
The must buy thing for a new Necron player, I like the contents of this box, having 2 of these is good enough for a medium sized game if you add in a Necron Lord. Always good to have a second box.
Necrons:
28 Necron Warriors The only Troop choice in the army, tough as hell and they're good at shooting.
Necron Scarab Swarms Great choice to use for tying down the heavy weapons team and stop the enemy from shooting.
Necron Destroyers Good for tank hunting, they're very mobile too.

Rating: 10/10
Best starting point for a new Ork player. Though the points in there is little, but it will keep you occupied a long time.
Orks:
22 Ork Boyz There can't be enough Boyz.
Ork Warbikes There can't be enough Warbikes.
Ork Trukk There can't be enough Trukks.

Rating: 9/10
Good starting point for new players. especially the number of Marines and the points this battleforce can give you. But some players just don't like scouts. I would consider the scouts a bonus.
Space Marines:
15 Space Marines Core of the army, this is the reason people play them anyway!
5 Space Marines Assault Squad Always good to have some, for the parts and the cool factor of flying marines!
5 Space Marines Scouts Good for some, but some hate painting faces, but these boys here should not be underestimated.
1 Space Marines Rhino Rhino's are always welcomed.

Rating: 8/10
The variations in this box is huge! Lots of choices for a new player to switch in between models to use different tactics. I'm not all that familiar with the Tau.
Tau Empire Battleforce:
12 Tau Fire Warriors Core of the army, must always have more of these guys.
12 Kroot Carnivores Looks good to model and paint, but some just prefer a full Fire Warrior army and they might not want the Kroot.
1 Tau XV8 Crisis Battlesuit I heard that this can be modeled into a broadside?
3 Tau XV25 Stealth Suits Good for sneaking around enemy lines and distract them.
6 Tau Gun Drones No idea what it does, but nothing wrong with having more.
1 Tau Markerlight Drone I suppose that this helps the army shoot better.
1 Tau Devilfish Is this the transport? If so, this is a good vehicle to have.

Rating: 10/10
Best starting buy for a new player. I bought 4 of these to build my army. A real money saver. This box also allows the player to play right away as it fulfills the Force Organisation Chart!
Tyranid Battleforce:
Tyranid Warriors Synapse Creatures, 2 wounds, immune to instant death, the Tyranid Warriors can either be a HQ, Elite or Fast Attack choice of the army, so mathematically, you can have up to 72 Tyranid Warriors in an army!
Tyranid Genestealers Best close combat fighters in the game! Rips everything apart, I love them!
Tyranid Termagants Meat shields of the army, their shooting is seriously dangerous as they can churn out a good number of shots. A well planned shooting phase can wipe out a Terminator squad.
Tyranid Hormagaunts Well planned use of them can really scare people out of their pants! Only advice is to make them Initiative 5 and let them have Strength 4, marines will die from them, but currently overpriced in the Codex.
Tyranid Carnifex This is the main focus in the box, nobody should buy a separate Carnifex, always get this from the Battleforce!
(10 Ripper Swarms, 2 Ripper Swarms with Spinefist) *These were not listed, but it's in the box.* Consider these free, as they come as a part of the Warriors and the Gaunts.

"There you have it, all these comes from what I think, comment away guys! Oh, poll is still open for those who haven't voted."

The best Battleforce set for value?

Whenever somebody wants to start a new army, we tell them to get the battleforce. Reason is, buying in a huge bundle from GW seems to be the best way of saving money, but is it ever the best idea? No doubt that battleforces are a great way to bolster your army (sounds like GW?), they provide more models for less money.
I have bought 4 Tyranid battleforces so far for my Tyranid army, that's what I call a good value in a box! I realize that most battleforces are just a throw in of some stuff that we'll never ever use, and some of them just have the best value of all that we can ever think of...

I won't be including the Imperial Guards as they are being released next month and you will have to get your hands on it to know whether you would want another. All the battleforces are of the same price, I hope the rumour of the battleforce price increase won't be true...

Here's a run down of all the battleforces in sequence...

Chaos Space Marine Battleforce:
15 Chaos Space Marines
8 Khorne Berzerkers
5 Possessed Chaos Space Marines
1 Chaos Space Marines Rhino

Dark Angels Ravenwing Battleforce:
6 Dark Angels Ravenwing Bikes
1 Dark Angels Ravenwing Attack Bike
1 Dark Angels Ravenwing Land Speeder

Dark Eldar:
20 Dark Eldar Warriors
5 Dark Eldar Reaver Jetbikes
1 Dark Eldar Raider
1 Jungle Trees set

Eldar:
5 Eldar Dire Avengers
8 Eldar Guardians
1 Eldar War Walker
1 Eldar Heavy Weapon with 2 Crew
1 Eldar Wave Serpent

Necrons:
28 Necron Warriors
7 Necron Scarab Swarms
3 Necron Destroyers

Orks:
22 Ork Boyz
3 Ork Warbikes
1 Ork Trukk

Space Marines:
15 Space Marines
5 Space Marines Assault Squad
5 Space Marines Scouts
1 Space Marines Rhino

Tau Empire Battleforce:
12 Tau Fire Warriors
12 Kroot Carnivores
1 Tau XV8 Crisis Battlesuit
3 Tau XV25 Stealth Suits
6 Tau Gun Drones
1 Tau Markerlight Drone
1 Tau Devilfish

Tyranid Battleforce:
3 Tyranid Warriors
8 Tyranid Genestealers
8 Tyranid Termagants
8 Tyranid Hormagaunts
1 Tyranid Carnifex
(10 Ripper Swarms, 2 Ripper Swarms with Spinefist) *These were not listed, but it's in the box.*

The poll is on the top right of the blog. Remember, vote based on value and usefulness of the content in the battleforce. It's a multiple choice poll, so choose your favourites...

"After the poll closes, I will talk on the worst valued battleforces... I noticed that the Space Wolves Battleforce isn't for sale anymore in the GW Website, does that mean something? You can't order the Codex anymore too."

Painting - Alpha Legion Chaos Terminator Lord

I'm done with the Chaos Terminator Lord, just that I still have to wait for the basing kit to arrive before I can finish him with the base. Temporarily, I glued him onto the small base, just for painting purposes.

I did his skin with the pale-coppery look, and gave him a tinge of greenish blue eyes (Hope the picture shows). The occasional claws and talons sticking out of him is painted Bleached Bone and was washed with some sepia wash just to add some flavour to him and to represent some of the Hydra's talons and claws, or teeth if you'd like.

He looks very clean, but I think I would rather have it this way since they really love to win, I want them to win in style!

"Time to memorize my notes, exam's tomorrow... And I just realized that I missed a photo of one of his shoulder pad, the one with the Alpha Legion hydra on... I didn't use free hand since I was messing it up yesterday with my shaky hands. I would take more pictures after I complete him 100%."

Alpha Legion Chaos Terminator Lord and Army List

I spent 7 hours last night working on the Chaos Lord, and this morning I spent more time on it again, I'm done with the armour and there's only bits and pieces left to do.

Remember, this is Chaos, so I made the armour extremely dark though I want it to emit the eerie bluish green colour. I'm doing my best to suit the fluff of the Alpha Legion.

Tomorrow I will explain more on the face, I used the bare head...

I spent quite some time on the tabbard and the cloak, just love painting the cloak... I attempted to free hand the hydra symbol but my hand was shaking like mad today, so I resolved to using the decal. After I put the decal on, I will paint Scorpion Green over it...

I'll have to wait till morning to take another picture of the completed model, I've finished painting the head but I haven't glued it on yet, just because I need the model to stand on his terrain first. All I have to do now is wait for the basing kit to come so I can settle his base.

After talking about that, I've revised my list.

We all know that the Alpha Legion has 2 Primarchs, Alpharius and Omegon, that's why I'm having 2 Chaos Lords with the same set up. When asked what's their name, they all answer Alpharius, so I'm gonna make all my marines to look the same if they have their helmets off.

The reason why they have Terminators  with different set ups is to ensure flexibility in combat.
This also explains why there are so many meltas in the army, since Chaos Space Marines have a default of 2 attacks, they're good at close combat and killing infantry, so I gave them meltas to make sure tanks and monstrous creatures are no problem in the army.

The Rhinos and the Land Raider is to give protection and mobility to the army. Putting them in the open can result in failing morale (Chaos Space Marines don't have And They Shall Know No Fear), that's why the number of vehicles and the Icon of Chaos Glory. The melta bombs give them an edge when assaulting a vehicle, and it also fits for them to use such tools to destroy the enemy.

They hired some Obliterators to do their bidding to provide fire support.

All in all, flexibility and mobility is the key here, even if one of my Rhinos pop, the rest can still handle the enemy. I play tested my older list and the Land Raider was destroyed along with the Termies and the Chaos Lords in turn 2, but the rest of the army took over their roles and still provided enough power to hold the enemy down. In short, one of the Hydra's head was cut off, but the other heads were still biting off the enemy.

"Can't wait to get my second Chaos Terminator Lord."

My hands and I...

Hmmm, night time in the hostel... The view outside my room ain't spectacular, well, I can't expect beautiful lush greenery in the heart of Malaysia, especially in Kuala Lumpur...

Painting and Gaming, Orks and Chaos - Rokkit Launcha Boy and Nob with Kombi Skorcha, Alpha Legion Army List

I used my past 2 days to complete these 2 Orks here. A boy with a Rokkit Launcha and an Ork Nob with a Kombi-Skorcha.

At first I actually thought that the Nob head was really ugly looking, but after I put it on and painted it, it looks quite cool...

The Rokkit Launcha boy was actually a fast work, next time I will draw more funny stuff on the Rokkits. Maybe a smiley shark face in front of the rokkit or some Orky words on it.

Today I tested my Alpha Legion Army List against a Space Marine army led by a Captain Lysander equivalent and some Inquisitorial Lords. Surprisingly, in turn 2, my Land Raider popped, both my Chaos Lords died, and my Terminator Champions ran from the battle. But the remaining force held the game and almost won the game for me, but it ended as a draw from a loot counter mission.

Here's the army list.

Total: 1750

The list is not bad, but looking at it, I will have to tweak it a little here and there. Maybe reduce the Chaos Havocs to a 5 men, 4 of them with melta, they will just go chase tanks and pop it then they're done. That should save me some points to put the Icon of Chaos Glory and maybe get a Power Fist going on.

The idea of this list is to imitate Alpharius and Omegon of the Alpha Legion by having twin Chaos Lords with the same equipments. Then an infantry based army without cult troops to fill up the ranks and some hired Obliterators to do the Alpha Legion's bidding.

"I've been planning this for a long time, maybe it's time to put it into motion and get going with it."
